Renovator's Checklist
Electrical wiring is an important part of your renovation project and needs to be planned and designed just like any other part of the house.
We have found that renovators will normally spend months planning room sizes, choosing colour schemes, picking out floor and bathroom tiles and the kitchen fit out and give little or no thought to the electrical wiring. They often wait until they have moved in or the project is nearly completed.
Follow our step-by-step plan below to map out the electrical wiring for your home renovation or extension so that it can be installed as you build.
The Easy 7 Step Plan
STEP 1: Start planning the furniture layout within each room; this in turn will help you plan the electrical layout.
STEP 2: With the furniture layout complete, mark on the renovation plan, using an ‘XX’ symbol, where power points (also called GPOs) should go.
STEP3: Phone points are normally installed in the kitchen area and the master bed room. If you require additional phone points, you will need to mark them on the plan using a triangle symbol.
STEP 4: TV points are usually located in the master bed, lounge, and family room and sometimes in the kitchen. Do you need additional points? Mark these with a capital `T' symbol.
STEP 5: Intercom system: An intercom system will have a station at the gate and at least one inside near the kitchen or family room, depending on the layout of the house. If your house is two storeys you will also need a handset up stairs. Mark this using ‘INT' as the symbol.
STEP 6: Home theatre room and Internet points: Are you incorporating a home theatre room into your current house or need more internet points? If you’re not sure where to locate these, ask us when we are on site.
STEP 7: Lights: All houses have them, now it's time to give some thought to what kind of lights you want in each room. The type of light will determine how many lights each room requires. Also, think about whether you will want a dimmer for lights in the master bedroom, lounge and home theatre room.
STEP 8: Pool and garden area: Depending on the general design some lighting will be required around the pool and general garden area. Again if you’re not sure where to locate these, make a note and ask us when we are on site.
